Love All: Where Passion Meets Precision

Tennis is a game of moments. The score may read love all, but what separates players from one another is not just skill. It is composure, focus, and belief.
At La Quinta Resort, Director of Tennis Kevin Connolly teaches that passion fuels the game, but precision wins it.
Precision Begins with Control
“Staying calm under pressure is a key ingredient to successful shot making,” Kevin explains. When your breathing is controlled, your body stays relaxed. And when you are relaxed, your decision-making sharpens. That is why you often hear players exhale forcefully as they strike the ball. “Exhaling at contact allows for more pace while staying under control.” It is a simple adjustment that creates power without sacrificing precision.

Passion Requires Discipline
Kevin emphasizes the difference between intensity and tension. Focus creates intensity. It allows players to block out distractions like wind, heat, crowd noise, or even an opponent’s momentum. Tension, however, creates tightness. When a player tightens up, swings lose fluidity and strokes lose depth, pace, and control. The key is mental intensity without physical tension. When you master that balance, you can withstand the highs and lows of a competitive match.
The gap between competitors and champions often comes down to mindset. “Not everyone can be a champion, but we all can compete. And if you are competing, you should strive to become a champion,” Kevin says. That pursuit begins with self-belief. Staying positive and focusing on the next point keeps you moving forward. Dwelling on past mistakes or difficult calls only stalls progress.
Visualization is another powerful tool. Seeing yourself succeed helps build the confidence required to perform when it matters most. And beyond mindset, preparation remains essential. Tennis is a repetitive sport. The hours spent practicing on and off the court create the edge needed in close matches. Rest, recovery, and nutrition are just as important as time on the baseline.
Growth rarely comes without setbacks. Kevin points to Novak Djokovic, who has won 24 Grand Slam titles but has also lost 14 Grand Slam finals. Even the greatest champions experience losses. What defines them is how they respond.
At La Quinta Resort, tennis is more than a match. It is the meeting point of passion and precision. The love of the game. The discipline of the craft. The pursuit of something greater every time you step onto the court.
