Meet Our Pros

Tom Gorman - Director of Tennis

Tom Gorman

Tom was named Director of Tennis at the world famous La Quinta Resort & Club and PGA WEST in La Quinta, CA in November 2008.

Tom attended Seattle University and graduated as a two time NCAA All-American. From there he went on to compete on the international professional tennis tour for 12 years, where he won 7 singles titles and 10 doubles titles.

He was a singles semi-finalist at the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, the French Open, and a French Open doubles runner-up with Stan Smith. Tom played on the U.S. Davis Cup team four years, including the Championship team in 1972. His top individual match wins included defeating Jimmy Connors at the U.S. Open, two time French Open winner Jan Kodes at the French Open, and two time Grand Slam winner Rod Laver at Wimbledon. Tom’s most thrilling victory came when he defeated Bjorn Borg in the finals of the Stockholm Indoors Open. He twice competed in the year-end Master’s Championships.

After retiring, Tom parlayed his tennis talents and began a highly respected coaching career. He led the U.S. Women’s Wightman Cup and Federation Cup teams in 1984 and 1985. In 1986, Tom was named as the U.S. Davis Cup Captain, a position he held for eight years. During that time, he also was selected as coach of the U.S. Men’s Olympic Tennis team in Seoul, Korea, and Barcelona, Spain. At the Seoul Summer Games he guided the doubles team of Ken Flach and Robert Seguso to a gold medal winning performance.

But it was coaching the Davis Cup teams that brought Tom the most success. Over the eight years, his teams won eighteen times, currently a U.S. Davis Cup Captain record. The highlight of those years was first winning the Davis Cup World Championship title in 1990 against Australia, and then again in 1992 defeating Switzerland with the "Dream Team", consisting of Andre Agassi, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, and Jim Courier. Tom is the most current American to have won a Davis Cup Championship as both a player and as a captain.

Tom is married to Danni and have two daughters, Hailey and KellyAnn.

Ian began his teaching career in the summer of 1992 and has been at the La Quinta Resort & Club since 2001. During the summer months, Ian directs the tennis program at the Tahoe Donner Tennis Center. Some of his coaching highlights include two national junior championships at the Fiesta Bowl in Scottsdale, Arizona. Ian focuses on the technical elements of the game and also emphasizes the strategy and fitness portions of tennis to round out a complete tennis player.

Ian has strung thousands of rackets at many professional tournaments around the country, including the BNP Paribas event right here in Indian Wells. "String your racket as many times per year as you play per week, this is a good rule of thumb", says Ian.

Ian is from Winnipeg, Canada and grew up playing ice hockey. Upon his arrival in the desert in 1989 he quickly took to tennis and developed a life long passion for the game. One of Ian’s goals is to win a National Singles title in one of the Senior Categories.
