Tennis

Voted one of the top tennis resorts in the world, La Quinta Resort Tennis Club attracts a veritable Who’s Who of celebrities and pros – from Novak Djokovic to Maria Sharapova. The tennis program got underway in 1978 when a consortium of famed former players – led by Charlie Pasarell, along with Tom Gorman, Arthur Ashe, Stan Smith, Bob Lutz, Marty Riessen, Roscoe Tanner and Dennis Ralston – joined forces to create one of the premier tennis facilities in the country. Pasarell and his team helped the resort gain national attention by staging a high-profile professional tournament sponsored by Grand Marnier, now known as the BNP Paribas Open, which eventually resulted in the resort’s sunken tournament-style center court, built in 1981

Tom Gorman

Tom graduated from Seattle University as a two time NCAA All-American and went on to compete on the international professional tennis tour for 12 years, where he won seven singles titles and nine doubles titles.

He was a singles semi-finalist at the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, and the French Open, and a French Open doubles runner-up with Stan Smith. Tom played on the U.S. Davis Cup team four years, including the Championship team in 1972. His top individual match wins included defeating Jimmy Connors at the U.S. Open, two time French Open winner Jan Kodes at the French Open, and two time Grand Slam winner Rod Laver at Wimbledon. Tom’s most thrilling victory came when he defeated Bjorn Borg in the finals of the Stockholm Indoors Open. He twice competed in the year-end Master’s Championships.

After retiring, Tom parlayed his tennis talents and began a highly respected coaching career. He led the U.S. Women’s Wightman Cup and Federation Cup teams in 1984 and 1985. In 1986, Tom was named as the U.S. Men’s Davis Cup Captain, a position he held for eight years. During that time, he also was selected as coach of the U.S. Men’s Olympic Tennis team in Seoul, Korea, and Barcelona, Spain. At the Seoul Summer Games he guided the doubles team of Ken Flach and Robert Seguso to a Gold Medal winning performance.

But it was coaching the Davis Cup teams that brought Tom the most success. Over the eight years, his teams won eighteen ties, currently a U.S. Davis Cup Captain record. The highlight of those years was first winning the Davis Cup World Championship title in 1990 against Australia, and then again in 1992 defeating Switzerland with the “Dream Team,” consisting of Andre Agassi, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, and Jim Courier.

Tom is the most current American to have won a Davis Cup Championship as both a player and as a captain.

Tom was named Director of Tennis at the world famous La Quinta Resort & Club and PGA West in La Quinta, CA in November 2008. He and his wife Danni have two daughters, Hailey and KellyAnn.
